White Dog Family Band – Escape the Mystery II

The last time we heard from White Dog, it was all doom and gloom apocalyptic noise. So pretty much anything Chris Jaques could follow that up with would be some form of respite. On Escape the Mystery II, Jaques introduces us to his Family Band and ups the weirdo factor quite a bit. There is, of course, the heavy drone we have come to expect from the Dog, but this time he’s throwing all sorts of surprises into the mix. There’s the spoken word vocals of his 7-year-old son (in something of a breakthrough role), some old dub samples, and even a few insane noise breakdowns. All in all, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more awesome and batty release this summer. Essential.

One of the last White Dog releases for a while. Academia has a stranglehold on our dog and making creepy crawl death drones is the last thing on this dude’s mind. Sad but true, there is but one last recording to be released after this and then the midnight howls will cease.

Resistance is the second part of the Resistance, Revolution, Retribution series. On Resistance, White Dog explores the history of Quebec via the FLQ and October Crisis of 1970. Side A combines Whitey’s usual dronage with some squealing feedback and source recording of the FLQ manifesto. Side B offers a sound companion to the psychological and social unrest of the October Crisis with “1970”.

Although White Dog is easing up on recording for a while, the project is showing no signs of softening up. On Resistance, supposedly the dog’s penultimate release, Chris Jaques offers some of the most desolate and monolithic drones we’ve heard from him yet – complete with some truly horrifying harsh noise and feedback echoing throughout. Gone are the dreary, moody atmospherics from last year’s essential self-titled tape (also released on Prairie Fire)- replaced here with pure, immersive darkness. There are some spoken word samples drowning among the murk, but the human presence is hardly comforting. This is end-of-the-world drone at its most captivating and consuming. Totally awesome.

7 year old Magnus joined White Dog for a brief set Dec. 23 at Freud's Bathhouse and Diner in Winnipeg opening for No UFO's.


We started off with some chill tones & Mags retelling a Christmas Story - then we had a synth battle - that I'd say I lost.  Super Fun.
