White Dog brings the noise

"The focus at send + receive this year is noise. If they want noise, they’ll get it," says solo noise performer Chris Jacques, aka White Dog (ex-Dan & Chris, Incinerators, F-Troop), regarding his abrasive debut appearance at the annual festival of sound.

"White Dog has always been about exploring the psychological dark side of everyday life and taking the most whimsical, the most silly sounds, experiences, and twisting them into something that makes your skin crawl," he continues.

"It’s all going to be just one long piece, but staying true to the creepy weirdness that is White Dog. I’m going to bring some lo-fi dirt to the festival. If I was going to title it anything, it would be Your Last Trip."

As noted last issue, this year’s theme for the s+r festival, which runs until Oct. 8, is "noise and disruption" — something White Dog says he intends to showcase wholeheartedly at a concert on Oct. 7 at Atomic Centre (167 Logan Ave.) with Julie Rousse and Mattin. See events listings or visit sendandreceive.org for more info.

Sure, he’s bringing the raw sound of imperious rex noise, but Jacques says this s+r appearance just might be his first and final appearance as the Sam Fuller-inspired White Dog. He says he’s deciding on a new name for his future noise-for-noise-sake projects.

"As I get more in tune with the gear that I have — just doing straight Kkkkkkrrrrrrcccccchhhhhhhhh (makes heavy static noise) — it’s like, maybe I got better, so I decided to have a name change.

"I’m thinking of using Brokenhead Wavers because I used to go to the lake and see the two brothers standing in the ditch on 59, waving. One of them died, so it’s an homage to them.

"Maybe Balsam Bay — I think that’s it for now."

Jacques is a former station manager and radio host at CKUW, as well as a fan-favorite music writer (known as crizwell, crizwel or simply criz) whose work has appeared in scores of issues of Stylus Magazine. Jacques was the editor of the mag for a bit. He also runs Prairie Fire/Dub Ditch Tapes — two locally operated cassette labels. Jacques says he’s released about 10 WD tapes on his own and other labels. You stereophonic street beaters can get the gist of the prairie/ditch scene by clicking on prairiefiretapes.com for complete catalogs and other analog stuff.

Right here! Right now! It’s time to kick out the "Kkkkkkrrrrrrcccccchhhhhhhhh" or whatever the hell it is!

"I use this thing called a Drone Commander. It’s basically two oscillators, and LFO and filters built into an ammunition box, and I have this other thing called a Haunt Box. It’s two oscillators and a reverb tank built into a briefcase," Jacques says of the WD instrumentation. Then he summarizes it all in easy-to-digest terms.

"It’s really an outcropping of what I have to process from everyday life," Jacques says of his disrupting White Dog noise.

"I’m really excited about the send + receive show. It’s one thing to have your local buddies hang out at your show, but to play for people who I also admire that have seen every dude from all over the world do their noise thing is a very nerve-wracking and stressful thing."
